Newscast

Look over the Super Bowl story ideas you jotted down yesterday.  Pick one you would like to expand into a newscast, and begin writing your first draft of the event.Remember what we know about starting newscasts and writing in general:
  • answer the 5 w's in your 1st sentence or two
  • add a lead/hook, just a tiny bit of drama, to make it newsworthy and get readers interested
  • use a journalistic tone--concise, 3rd person, dramatic but truthful
When done, pick a friend or neighbor's blog to read and comment on their 5 w's, hook, and journalistic tone.

  1. Three students were seen fighting in the gym at School for Global Studies today, over who would be chosen as the center during a class basketball game. The game was an opportunity for Global's star players to shine in gym. That's not what happened though. Instead, there was pandemonium.

  2. Recently local press has been saturated with letter and articles reporting on bouts of vandalism. Mailboxes have been smashed, fences destroyed, and are windows shattered. The message is clear: undisciplined teenagers are on the loose. It's Lord of the Flies in our town, according to the local.

  3. Visit a school and you'll probably discover that kids these days are not allowed to carry backpacks into their classrooms. The have to take their stuff out of their bags, and transfer it to small bags. The reason for this is that there isn't enough room for their backpacks. Sometimes people trip. Sometimes people can't squeeze between chairs. Kids have been going to school for many years. Why now have their backpacks become such a problem? More importantly, how did teachers and kids get so divided on this issue? Stay tuned though--as in this school, they may not be as divided s you think.
